Achievements vs. Accomplishments : A Computational Treatment of Atomicity, Incrementality, and Perhaps of Event Structure

چکیده

Achievements and accomplishments are argued in this paper to differ w.r.t. atomicity (rather than punctuality), a notion strongly but not exclusively related to incrementality, i.e., to eventobject mapping functions ; the latter will be shown to be unsufficient to account for certain cases of non-atomicity. A computational treatment of incrementality and atomicity will be presented, and a number of related empirical problems considered, notably lexical polysemy in verb – argument relationships. Finally, the approach will be shown to be extendable to the notion of telicity, opening the way to a broader treatment of event structure.

Computational Lexical Semantics, Incrementality, and the So-called Punctuality of Events

The distinction between achievements and accomplishments is known to be an empirically important but subtle one. It is argued here to depend on the atomicity (rather than punctuality) of events, and to be strongly related to incrementality (i.e., to event-object mapping functions). A computational treatment of incrementality and atomicity is discussed in the paper, and a number of related empir...

Lipoprotein lipase gene polymorphisms as risk factors for stroke: a computational and meta-analysis

Objective(s): Stroke is the most common neurological disorder and genetic susceptibility has an important role in its etiology. Polymorphism in several genes such as lipoprotein lipase (LPL) is propounded as a risk for stroke. This meta-analysis investigated the association of rs285 and rs320 LPL polymorphism with stroke risk. Materials and Methods: We searched PubMed, Clarivate Analytics Web o...

Telicity in L2 Chinese Acquisition

The interaction between syntactic structures and event structures has become an important area of linguistic research. The telic/atelic distinction, a property of an event having or not having a natural endpoint, is a focus in the discussion of this interaction. Together with durativity and dynamicity, telicity, a semantic notion, forms the base of the well-known Vendler (1967) four-way typolog...

Incrementality in naming and reading complex numerals: evidence from eyetracking.

Individuals speak incrementally when they interleave planning and articulation. Eyetracking, along with the measurement of speech onset latencies, can be used to gain more insight into the degree of incrementality adopted by speakers. In the current article, two eyetracking experiments are reported in which pairs of complex numerals were named (arabic format, Experiment 1) or read aloud (alphab...

Revisiting the distinction between accomplishments and achievements

As is well known, Vendler (1957) proposed to distinguish between two classes of telic predicates, namely, accomplishments (eat an apple, draw a circle), denoting durative events, and achievements (reach the summit, win the race), denoting punctual ones. As Kearns (2003) has recently emphasized, Vendler adopted this distinction from Ryle (1949), who already distinguished « task verbs » like sear...
